  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/3 cup whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream (room temperature)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Tangzhong (from recipe above)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons apple butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling by cooking diced apples with water, sugar, lemon juice, and spices until tender. Mix in cornstarch to thicken and let cool.
  2. For the dough, combine warm milk, water, sugar, salt, yeast, and Tangzhong mixture in a bowl. Gradually add flour until dough forms; knead until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size.
  4. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread softened butter over it. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon before adding cooled apple filling; roll tightly and slice into pieces.
  5. Arrange in a greased baking pan and allow a second rise before baking until golden brown.
  6. Prepare the cream cheese frosting by mixing softened butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and apple butter until smooth.
  7. Frost warm rolls and enjoy!
