Ingredients

Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted
Cheese Filling
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
Baking Solution
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 4 cups water
Topping
  • 1 tbsp coarse sea salt

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 20 minutes.
Make the Cheese Filling
  1. In a bowl, mix together mozzarella cheese, cream cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper until well combined.
Shape the Pretzels
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Once the dough has risen, divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 18 inches long.
  3. Flatten the rope slightly, place a spoonful of cheese filling in the center, and fold the dough over to seal it. Twist into a pretzel shape.
Boil and Bake
  1. In a saucepan, bring water and baking soda to a boil. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the baking sheet.
  2. Brush each pretzel with water and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Serve
  1. Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauce!
