Bread Mixture
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread such as sourdough or brioche
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
Toppings
  • 1 cup shredded cheese such as cheddar or Gruyère
  • 1 cup cooked bacon or ham chopped
  • 1 cup fresh spinach optional
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for frying

Method

Prepare the Egg Mixture
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried thyme until well combined.
  2. Set aside for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Soak the Bread
  1. Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated, then let excess drip off.
Cook the French Toast
  1. Place the soaked bread slices in the hot frying pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  2. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more oil to the pan as needed.
Add Toppings
  1. Once the French toast is cooked, top each slice with shredded cheese, cooked bacon or ham, and fresh spinach if using.
  2. Cover the pan for a minute to melt the cheese.
Serve
  1. Serve hot, garnished with additional herbs or spices if desired.
